Beneath the Surface - Choosing Trust -
One of the topics we are exploring in the SoulFully Creative Community this week is trust. The prompt for this painting, “Beneath the Surface,” asked us to sit in the often uncomfortable space of not knowing what’s germinating — and wow, did it deliver. I really struggled with this one.
When I first sat down to paint, I had no idea what would come through. I’ve gotten somewhat comfortable with the unpredictable flow of watercolors — and honestly, life too. I’ve been getting better at surrendering to the flow, both on the page and in life, but this layering process brought up unexpected resistance. As soon as I started adding the next layer, I kind of freaked out. I hated what was happening on the page.
But I reminded myself: this is the process. This discomfort is part of it. The discomfort is what teaches us to trust because it has to become a conscious choice, so I chose to trust that something meaningful would eventually come through — if I just kept showing up.
Just like in life, there were moments in this process where I felt like scrapping it, starting over, walking away completely.
And I did walk away — but not to quit. Just to let each layer dry. That space, that pause, was part of the magic.
When I came back to it for the final step — the line work —where we tune into the energy of the painting and see what’s being revealed, something shifted. That part of the process always invites me to tune in deeper… to follow the energy and respond intuitively. And slowly, the chaos began to make sense. Not because I forced it — but because I stayed with it long enough for clarity to emerge.
This one little painting taught me so much. It showed me that if we are willing to sit in the discomfort of not knowing…
To truly embrace the space between wanting and receiving…
To really feel the ebb and flow of the process without judgement…
Eventually things start to fall into place…
Maybe not in the way we expected.
Maybe not on our timeline.
But in a way that makes sense… when we’re finally ready to see it.
I hope this serves as a reminder that even when you can’t see how everything will work out…
Even when you’re deep in the messy middle…
Sit with it. Feel what needs to be felt. And then choose to trust.
Keep going. You’re becoming.
If this theme resonated with you, I invite you to explore it in your own way — maybe through painting, journaling, or simply sitting with the discomfort of something you can’t quite see coming together yet.
And as always, I’d love to hear how this landed for you — feel free to comment or share what resonated with you here.
